Dr. Nuzhat Chalisa, Author of Diabetes Beyond Numbers

Dr. Nuzhat Chalisa, a member of the Chicago community of Dawoodi Bohras, is a clinical endocrinologist and author of the book Diabetes Beyond Numbers, a Complete Guide to Understanding Diabetes Management. 

Diabetes Beyond Numbers is a resource for those who want to learn about diabetes prevention and management. Targeted towards diabetics and pre-diabetics, it explains the disease in simple terms, providing a clear understanding of the mechanics of diabetes, its complications, and how it is related to other illnesses such as heart disease. It also offers advice on how to create a comprehensive game plan to manage diabetes, as well as dietary recommendations and information on new medications.

Dr. Chalisa has been practicing endocrinology for over twenty years, and spent the last twelve at the Channahon Healthcare Center of Morris Hospital, located just outside of Chicago. She consults on a wide variety of endocrine diseases, including, but not limited to, osteoporosis, obesity, thyroid problems, and metabolic disorders; however, her primary research interest has been in the area of diabetes.

Dr. Chalisa also serves as the Communications Director for one of the American Diabetes Association’s sixteen Interest Group Leadership Teams. Additionally, Dr. Chalisa is the founder and president of the diabetes nonprofit Kisat Diabetes Organization, which focuses on the prevention of diabetes complications through early screening and education. She has been a keynote speaker in several national and international diabetes and obesity conferences, including the Global Type 2 Diabetes Research Summit in Dubai.

In addition to her accomplishments in the medical profession, Dr. Chalisa is also an active member of the local branch of the Amatullah Ai Association, a community-run organization that focuses on health and wellness; additionally, she is currently running a virtual diabetes clinic for members of the community over Zoom.

Dr. Chalisa is currently a student in the Harvard Medical School Effective Writing for Healthcare program. When she is not working, Dr. Chalisa likes reading, cooking, and traveling.
