Our Community in Detroit

In and around Detroit, where hard work meets opportunity, the Dawoodi Bohra community has built a home rooted in faith, service, and a shared commitment to progress. Our families have been part of the Motor City since the 1980s, contributing to its rich history of resilience and reinvention. From the bustling neighborhoods of Farmington Hills to the iconic heart of Detroit, we’re proud to be part of this great city’s journey.

Where We Are

Our masjid, Burhani Masjid, is located in Farmington Hills, a stone’s throw from the vibrant streets of Detroit. It’s our gathering place for prayer, reflection, and community-building.

Though, our story extends well beyond its walls. Half of our members work in healthcare, serving as doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals in hospitals and clinics across the metro area. Others are entrepreneurs, engineers, educators, and students—all woven into the story of opportunity that define Detroit’s neighborhoods and industries.

You’ll find us strolling the Detroit Riverwalk, enjoying a Tigers game at Comerica Park, or lending a hand at food drives and clean-ups in the city’s revitalized downtown.

Where We Are

Our Story

Our connection to Detroit began in 1988 when our first families immigrated to Farmington Hills. Guided by shared values and inspired by Detroit’s spirit of reinvention, our community has grown into a diverse and dynamic group of professionals, entrepreneurs, and educators.

Our commitment to opportunity is evident in the success of our members. From healthcare professionals saving lives to small business owners supporting local economies, we’re proud of the impact we’ve made and continue to make.

Our Community

We are a mosaic of talents and passions, reflecting the diversity and determination of Detroit itself. Half of our members work in healthcare, addressing the needs of patients across metro Detroit. Others are educators shaping young minds, engineers innovating in technology, and entrepreneurs growing businesses that serve the community.

Education is a cornerstone of our community. With over 98% of our students pursuing higher education at institutions like Wayne State, the University of Michigan, and Oakland University, we’re investing in the future of Detroit and beyond.

Healthcare is at the forefront of our efforts, with over 62 professionals in our community working to improve lives across Detroit. Entrepreneurship is another strength, with 57 small businesses—including 25 women-owned—creating jobs and encouraging innovation.

Service is a core part of who we are. Through partnerships with local nonprofit organizations and city officials, we tackle issues like hunger, education, and sustainability. As active members of interfaith groups, we strive to build bridges and foster understanding across communities.
Our environmental efforts reflect Detroit’s commitment to sustainability. From tree-planting drives to waste reduction initiatives, we’re working to preserve the city’s future. And through educational support, we help ensure the next generation is ready to lead Detroit forward.
