Weaving Community Partnerships in Oakland County

The Dawoodi Bohra community of Detroit began laying their roots in Oakland County over 50 years ago.  Since then, farmland has given way to new cities and new opportunities.  Despite this steadfast growth, the Oakland County Sheriff’s office continues to provide a variety of services and support to those residing, working, and worshiping in a community that includes 12 cities, two universities, as well as Burhani Masjid, where the Dawoodi Bohras of Detroit worship.

The Detroit Bohras recently welcomed Sheriff Michael Bouchard and his team to visit and learn more about our culture, community kitchen (known as Faiz al-Mawaid al-Burhaniyah), education, and outreach activities.  Honored as 2022 “Sheriff of the Year” by the Michigan Sheriffs’ Association, Sheriff Bouchard can often be seen in the community conversing with members of the public.  His team’s commitment to Oakland County includes not only policing, but working with schools, youth, businesses, and houses of worship.  Whether it is providing bikes to children, packed meals, or coats during winter, the Sheriff’s office is busy engaging with the community.

As a token of appreciation for all that they do, the Dawoodi Bohras of Detroit paid a visit to the sheriff department’s communication center to share sweets lovingly made by the Rising Hope Bakery operated by our friends at Zaman International.  The sheriff department’s communication staff works 24/7 behind the scenes.  While not in the limelight, the Dawoodi Bohras recognize the great effort they put in for their neighbors.

The Rising Hope Bakery holds a special meaning for the Dawoodi Bohra community.  It is the latest initiative of our partners at Zaman International.  Supported by two state-of-the-art commercial kitchens where women receive professional culinary arts training, complete apprenticeships and secure employment, Rising Hope Bakery creates delicious product-to-market items that help fund onsite employment opportunities for women facing extreme poverty.  For the last several years, the Dawoodi Bohras of Detroit have been supporting Zaman International’s mission: to facilitate change and advance the lives of marginalized women and children by enabling them to meet essential needs common to all humankind.

As residents of the wonderful state of Michigan for over 50 years, the Dawoodi Bohras of Detroit are grateful to be able to support community partners like Sheriff Bouchard’s office and Zaman International.
