Representatives of the Dawoodi Bohra community of Chicago paid a visit to the Consulate General of India in Chicago earlier this month to meet the newly appointed Consul General, Mr Amit Kumar, and his colleague Mr. Gupta, the Consul for Economic, Commercial and Community Affairs.
The Aamil or leader of the Chicago Dawoodi Bohras, Norman Nooruddin, was joined at the meeting by community members Hatim Nooruddin, Aamir Chalisa and Yusuf Shikari. The Chicago Bohras used the meeting to educate the Consul General about their faith and community, the wide ranging positions of its members in business, healthcare, technology, law and education, and activities in support of the wider Chicago society, such as food drives and environment clean-ups organized under the Dawoodi Bohras’ global Project Rise initiative. The important topic of safe travel to India during the global COVID19 pandemic was also discussed.
The Aamil or leader of the Chicago Dawoodi Bohras, Norman Nooruddin, said,
"We are proud to count among our members many families whose forefathers came from India to settle in the wonderful city of Chicago. Our commitment to the United States is strong and unwavering, but we shall always look to India with great affection. Those ties will never be diminished.”
The Dawoodi Bohras presented the Consul General, Mr Amit Kumar, with a traditional Bohra shawl; a book on the 100th birthday anniversary of His Holiness, the late Mohammed Burhanuddin, who was the 52nd head of the faith; and a gift of chocolates.
The Dawoodi Bohras of Chicago have lived and worked peacefully in and around Chicago since the 1950s. Many of the 1,000 members that make up the Dawoodi Bohra community of Chicago trace their roots to India, and links with the country remain very strong.
The Bohras look forward to welcoming the Consul General to visit their masjid in 2022 to one of the many events they are planning to hold under Project Rise.
