Serving Communities Across America

Our world right now continues to face challenges, with issues that range from poverty and hunger to climate crisis and inequality. These issues cannot be addressed in isolation.

Giving back to the world around us is an integral part of our faith.

Through collective and collaborative efforts, Project Rise volunteers of the Dawoodi Bohra community throughout the United States and around the world aim to improve the lives of children and families.

We undertake a wide spectrum of initiatives and activities including but not limited to healthcare, nutrition, hygiene, environmental responsibility and conservation as well as education.

“All of Creation is a family dependent upon Allah. Therefore the most beloved of Creation to Him is the one who benefits His family the most.”

- Prophet Mohammed

Our Annual Impact

WALKING FOR WATER IN SEATTLE

Project Rise volunteers of Seattle continued their participation in the Water1st Walk at the Seattle Space Needle for a second year, where all proceeds were donated to clean water and sanitation projects in Africa. This walk supported women and children who often sacrificed education, employment, and leisure to access clean water from distant sources. Each step helped raise funds for clean water access for communities in Musambirisi, Kenya, bringing hope and relief to countless families.

PICKING UP WITH PURPOSE IN DETROIT

In Detroit, the Dawoodi Bohra community took to the streets to collaborate with local officials to pick up over 200 lbs of trash. Dawoodi Bohra communities across the United States—including Chicago, Washington D.C., Houston, and Orange County—launched a series of sustainability initiatives under Project Rise, aiming to reduce food waste and reinforce environmentally conscious food practices. Partnering with local experts, institutions, organisations, and volunteers, they expanded gardens and orchards around their community premises to grow fresh produce using sustainable efforts, promoting a greener environment.

UNITING TO ADDRESS HOMELESSNESS IN CALIFORNIA

In 2024, the Dawoodi Bohra community in the United States stepped up to address California’s homelessness crisis, which affects over 180,000 people: over a quarter of the nation’s homeless population. Across the state, Project Rise volunteers engaged youth, partnered with officials, and provided essential supplies. In Los Angeles, Bohra children assembled 75 meal kits and 35 snack packs with LA Family Housing. Volunteers distributed 1,000 lunch packets during Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel’s Valley Day of Service.

475 FAMILIES, 5 CITIES, 1 MISSION: ZERO HUNGER IN THE USA

In 2024, Dawoodi Bohra communities in the U.S. continued combating hunger and aiding vulnerable groups. In Washington, D.C., they partnered with Seneca Heights Apartments for the fifth year to provide meals. Detroit volunteers collaborated with Zaman Humanity’s Food Pantry, restocking essentials for 300 families monthly and donating over 1,200 lbs of food to local organizations. Boston’s Bohras organized a food drive, distributing groceries and essentials to 175+ families. Chicago volunteers packed 25,920 meals with Feed My Starving Children, while San Antonio Bohras contributed 24,213 meals through the San Antonio Food Bank.

I was grateful for the opportunity to join the Dawoodi Bohras of Detroit to clean up Farmington Hills and protect the natural resources we are blessed to steward. I’m proud of the work Governor Whitmer and I have done to protect Michigan’s environment, and I encourage every Michigander to take time to step up and make a difference.

The month of Ramadan embodies the spirit all of us at City Hall should be bringing to our work to make Los Angeles a place we’re proud to call home. It is a month that provides us opportunities for heightened charity, for good deeds, for community, for rededicating ourselves to spiritual undertaking, and for renewed vigor in all that we do. It is a pleasure for me and my staff to be here, and to join hands with this community that truly lives out the values of its faith: a faith that is practised by serving others in their communities.
