Dawoodi Bohras of Detroit Welcome Students of Religious Diversity Journey Program
In a heartwarming display of community engagement and educational outreach, the Dawoodi Bohra community of Detroit recently opened their doors to over 20 junior high school students as part of the Interfaith Leadership Council’s Religious Diversity Journey program. Held at their community center in Farmington Hills, this event provided students with an immersive experience into the Dawoodi Bohra faith, traditions and values.
The Religious Diversity Journey program aims to introduce students to the spectrum of religious beliefs and cultural practices that make up society through firsthand encounters. By visiting various houses of worship, students gain insights into Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Sikhism, and beyond.
A Day of Cultural Education and Community Service
During the half-day event, students from Madison Heights delved into the doctrinal aspects of the Dawoodi Bohra faith and were given a tour of the community center, where they were educated about the architectural symbolism embedded within it. The visit culminated in a traditional Dawoodi Bohra meal shared between students and community members and a collaborative service project in which 150 bags of Split Peas & Lentils with Rice were packed for Metro Food Rescue to support 600 individuals in need.
Beth Falenski, Assistant Program Manager of the Interfaith Leadership Council, emphasized the enriching diversity within metropolitan Detroit. "Religious belief and expression are the most dynamic influences in our culture. The Dawoodi Bohras commitment to education and engagement was very evident throughout the planning and the event, and it was a pleasure to see our students so interested and inspired." she stated, stressing the importance of such interactions in building bridges between different faith communities.
Reflections on Interfaith Dialogue
Reflecting on the event, Zainab Boxwala of the Dawoodi Bohra community expressed gratitude for the opportunity to educate and engage with the younger generation. "This initiative aligns with the teachings of our leader, His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, who encourages us to respect all religions and embrace the diversity of our human family," she remarked.
As the Religious Diversity Journey program continues to connect communities, the Dawoodi Bohras of Detroit also hope to expand their efforts in educating their younger generation on the importance of inclusivity and cooperation within society. Through dialogue, education, and compassionate action, they aim to facilitate interfaith engagement and understanding, to create a harmonious environment for all.
