The Dawoodi Bohra community of New Jersey joined East Brunswick Township to celebrate Ramadan with a lighting ceremony held at the Municipal Courtyard. Co-sponsored by the East Brunswick Human Relations Council (EBHRC) and the East Brunswick Interfaith Clergy, the annual event celebrates unity and shared values fostering harmony and mutual understanding within the community.
The evening was hosted by Erum Shakir, Chair of the EBHRC, and featured notable speakers including Council President Kevin McEvoy.
Representing the Dawoodi Bohra community, Fatema Basrai delivered heartfelt remarks on the importance of Ramadan and the role of interfaith solidarity in strengthening communities.
“It is truly remarkable that our masjid has been part of this community for over 20 years, and this year, we proudly celebrate our 21st Ramadan in East Brunswick. As we enter this blessed month, we pray for it to inspire unity, compassion, and hope in our hearts as we work together for a more inclusive and harmonious future,” she said.
The event carried an atmosphere of reflection and mutual appreciation as attendees from various faiths and traditions joined together in marking the start of Ramadan. The ceremonial lighting of the Ramadan crescent was a symbolic moment reflecting renewal, spiritual reflection, and friendship.
