Tampa’s Dawoodi Bohra Community Backs Mayor Castor in Hurricanes' Recovery Efforts
Eight weeks after the devastating hurricanes Helene and Milton, the city of Tampa continues to recover. Causing billions of dollars in damages, the resilience of Tampa’s residents and the efforts of local leaders have been crucial in restoring hope and rebuilding the community in the aftermath of the natural disasters.
In an event that focused on peace, harmony, and hurricane recovery, Tampa’s Dawoodi Bohra Community extended their support to Mayor Jane Castor and RISE Tampa, the Tampa Police Department’s nonprofit organization, used in aiding hurricane victims. The funds contributed to RISE Tampa will directly assist those impacted by the hurricanes, providing essential support to families in need, through efforts of the local Police Department. The event also served as an opportunity to express gratitude for the services of Mayor Jane Castor and her team during these challenging times.
The Dawoodi Bohra community, inspired by the guidance of their leader, His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, is committed to improving the lives of those in need through their global philanthropic initiative, Project Rise. Besides working in various streams that align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, this endeavor also provides emergency response, recovery, and support for communities impacted by natural disasters around the world.
“Tampa is our home, and its people are our neighbors and friends,” said Aliasger Kader, a member of the local Dawoodi Bohra community. “The severity of the hurricane had palm trees falling onto decks and patios, homes flooded and destroyed. It was heartbreaking to see fellow citizens struggle. In the past, our Project Rise volunteers have aided victims of natural disasters, and today, we stand with Tampa”.
Mayor Castor’s leadership in the aftermath of the hurricanes was marked by swift action including coordinating emergency responses, organizing relief efforts, and providing recovery resources. Mayor Castor remarked:
“RISE Tampa and the Tampa Police Department will be able to utilize this generous donation to assist citizens, and for this we are grateful.”
From neighbors distributing medical supplies and personal care items, to volunteers clearing debris, and local organizations providing food, water and resources to those in need, the people of Tampa have banded together during these trying times. "We believe that mitigating climate-related disasters is a shared responsibility and are inspired to support Mayor Castor and the Tampa Police Department’s work towards recovery” said Shehrebanu Akolawala of the Tampa Dawoodi Bohras.
